The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah discussed a Master's thesis titled "Bacterial Biosynthesis of Selenium Nanoparticles and In Vitro Evaluation of Their Antimicrobial and Anticancer Efficacy" presented by the student Noor Salman Eesa.

The thesis explored the eco-friendly green biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using the cell-free extract of a novel bacterial strain, Bacillus cereus IND 10. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using advanced spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including UV–Vis, DLS, Zeta Potential, TEM, FTIR, and EDX. The study also involved minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination, erythrocyte hemolysis assays, MTT cytotoxicity, DPPH antioxidant assays, and enzymatic evaluation of GPX1 and SOD2 expression.

The study aimed to produce selenium nanoparticles through a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly biological route using Bacillus cereus IND 10, comprehensively characterize their physicochemical properties, and evaluate their antimicrobial, anticancer, and biocompatibility profiles.

The findings revealed promising bioactivity of synthesized SeNPs against Candida albicans and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), demonstrating minimal hemolytic activity and low toxicity toward normal breast cells. This work provides a fundamental framework for developing biogenic selenium nanoparticles for potential biomedical, antimicrobial, and oncological applications.
