A master's thesis at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Basra, examined the assessment of urban quality-of-life indicators in the city of Umm Qasr.
The thesis, presented by student Ali Mohammed Ali, aimed to conduct a comprehensive survey of basic services in Umm Qasr—covering their extent, quantity, spatial distribution, and location—to evaluate their current status and map the spatial distribution of various community services. It sought to assess the efficiency of services provided to residents, identify service deficits in specific neighborhoods or institutions (whether in terms of building numbers or staffing levels), and offer recommendations for redistributing services and addressing shortages to balance supply with the city's growing population. Additionally, the study gauged resident satisfaction with provided services and the factors influencing that satisfaction, while analyzing income levels, employment opportunities, and the sense of safety and social stability within the city's neighborhoods.
The research also aimed to identify neighborhoods most affected by deficiencies in quality-of-life indicators to help guide future development plans, and to propose measures to improve the city's situation, thereby raising its ranking according to global and local quality-of-life standards.
The thesis covered aspects such as population size, growth, distribution, density, and demographic composition, as well as urban land use in Umm Qasr—including residential, commercial, industrial, and service-oriented uses, transportation infrastructure, and other land-use categories
