A master's thesis at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Basra, examined the "Spatial Analysis of Water Desalination and Bottling Plants in Northern Basra Governorate: A Study in Industrial Geography."
Presented by student Zainab Yaqoub Abdulaziz Al-Tamimi, the thesis aimed to analyze the spatial distribution of water desalination and bottling plants within the study area and to identify the natural, human, and economic geographic factors influencing their location and distribution. It also examined their production characteristics, output volumes, and the demand for potable water. The results revealed a clear disparity in the spatial distribution of these plants across the districts of the study area—with the highest concentration found in Al-Qurna District—as well as the predominance of private-sector facilities. The study established a correlation between the number of plants and various demographic, economic, and production variables, while also highlighting a gap between current production and projected future demand for potable water.
The thesis covered the conceptual and theoretical framework of water desalination and bottling plants, the geographic factors influencing their location, their classification, spatial distribution, operational characteristics, and production stages, as well as the challenges facing these facilities and the current and future demand for their products
