The University of Basrah introduced its students to modern plant tissue culture techniques through a visit organized by the Date Palm Research Center, which welcomed a group of students from the Department of Food Science at the College of Agriculture, accompanied by faculty members, to learn about the stages of date palm propagation using plant tissue culture techniques.
The visit included an overview of the workflow in the tissue culture laboratory and the stages of propagation, as well as discussions of the main challenges facing tissue-cultured plants and the scientific methods used to address and minimize them.
Dr. Khayoun Ali Mohsen, Head of the Propagation Department at the center, together with specialized female faculty members, provided a detailed explanation of the stages of date palm micropropagation, the equipment and nutrient media used, the main challenges encountered in tissue culture, and ways to mitigate them.
The visit forms part of the University of Basrah’s efforts to strengthen scientific cooperation among its academic units, bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, and provide students with opportunities to learn about modern techniques in plant tissue culture.
