A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Basra, examined the "communicative intentionality" within the epistles of the Imams—from Imam al-Hasan to Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon them).
The thesis, presented by student Maryam Adel Mohammed, aimed to uncover how communicative intentionality is manifested in these epistles. It identifies the intentional patterns and pragmatic dimensions revealed by the texts, drawing upon context, situational settings, linguistic devices, syntactic structures, and speech acts. The study focuses on the epistles contained in the third volume of the book *Makateeb al-A’immah* (Epistles of the Imams) by Sheikh Ali al-Ahmadi al-Miyanji, which includes the writings of Imams al-Hasan, al-Husayn, Zayn al-Abidin, and al-Baqir (peace be upon them).
The thesis explores the concept of intentionality and its roots in classical Arabic tradition, covering topics such as communicative intentionality—bridging philosophical foundations and pragmatic dimensions—as well as the directive and reformist intentionality found in the epistles of Imams al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and the educational and directive intentionality in the epistles of Imams Zayn al-Abidin and al-Baqir. The work concludes by presenting the key findings of the study
