A master's thesis at Basra University discussing (types of repetition and its functions in two speeches selected from the speeches of the British Prime Minister)
A master's thesis in the Department of English at the College of Education for Human Sciences at Basra University examined (Types of repetition and its functions in two discourses selected from the speeches of British Prime Minister Theresa May: A study in discourse analysis) by student (Asma Kazim Sakr)
The letter addressed “repetition” in this thesis as a concept that includes not only repeated words but also phrases, sentences, letters, and repeated ideas. In other words, repetition comes in different types such as: synonyms, antonyms, paraphrasing, and others. It has been proven through this study that these types perform different functions such as affirmation, expressing feelings, persuasion and others. Politicians have used repetition in general and specifically British Prime Minister Theresa May, as an effective technique to influence their audiences and convince them of their ideas and beliefs.
The letter included an examination of the types and functions of redundancy in two political speeches by the Prime Minister (Theresa May), specifically the (Brexit) and (Resignation) speeches, based on the Tanskanen model for analysis. The aim of this study is to define the two categories (chanting and alignment) presented in the model and to research the functions performed by each category in the two speeches of the Prime Minister (Theresa May).
The message concluded that types of repetition perform multiple functions in order to reach the main goal, which is to convince the public of the prime minister's ideologies by influencing their emotions and winning over them. Also, repetition helps in understanding the behavior of the prime minister and identifying her personality according to her linguistic choices.
