A master’s thesis at the University of Basrah-College of Medicine entitled; Time Trend study of death aetiologies in Basrah Governorate during the years (2012-2018) was discussed. The thesis presented by the student Hassanein Mohammed Hussein aims to:
1- Describe the time trend of deaths in Basrah Governorate for the years 2012-2018.
2- Elicit whether there is considerable difference between what is written on death certificates and what is recorded in health statistical sectors via encoding of death aetiologies according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems the 10th version (ICD 10).
3- Explain the top ten killers in 2012-2018.
The thesis concluded that:
1. Decrease in crude death rate and increase of age-standardized death rate of all causes.
2. Excess of male deaths. (<1 year)-specific mortality rate and (≥65 years)-specific mortality rate represents the highest age group deaths. Predominant deaths occur in hospitals.
3. Almost there is no change in life expectancy at birth with a little raise of the potential years of life lost.
The thesis recommended:
1- Improvement of antenatal care, birth facilities, postnatal care services and neonatal health care with prioritization of health care resources toward neonatal health problems and cardiac disorders.
2- Establishment of geriatric health care services and surgery for primary and secondary health care services.
3- Continuous evaluations of hospitals.
4- Revising of formal death certificate to make it easier besides continuous and periodic training courses of physicians and health statistics employers in regard to accurate and complete information of death certificates
