The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah discussed the master’s thesis (preparation and evaluation of nanoparticles for the drug aceclofenac to increase solubility and give it in the form of a topical gel) by student Aseel Kazem Thamer.
The aim of the study was to prepare and evaluate different formulations of aceclofenac nano-suspension by precipitation method using different variables related to polymer type, quantity and organic solvent in order to obtain the most acceptable formula regarding nanoparticle size and distribution In addition to the preparation and laboratory evaluation of a hydrogel containing nanoscale aceclofenac suspension for use in drug delivery it is characterized by a high drug release rate and improved permeability.
A safe method was used to increase drug solubility without altering the chemical nature by preparing forty-eight formulations of aceclofenac nano-suspensions using a variety of drug-to-polymer ratios such as PVP-K25, HPMC (5 and 50) and poloxamers (188 and 388) individually, Or combined using different types of volatile organic solvents of different sizes and then evaluated in terms of mean particle size, polydispersity index, drug loading efficiency, physical stability and in vitro drug release study.
The study concluded the possibility of preparing the drug aceclofenac with industrially suitable formulas and a suitable laboratory method with good specifications that allow to increase the rate of solubility in water and increase the proportion of the drug available for the purpose of crossing the skin layers in case that it has been clinically evaluated to be of better drug efficacy.
