The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah, as part of a series of lectures by the visiting professor, organized a panel discussion entitled (Naturally Existing Amino Acid Derivatives, Clarifying Structure and Composition) with the participation of researchers and specialists.The seminar included a lecture delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Weam Nabil El-Sayed Ibrahim from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Mansoura University / Arab Republic of Egypt, which included a review of a group of natural sources of amino acids and peptides such as milk, fish, seaweed and soybeans. Milk is rich in biologically active peptides.The most important fungal-derived peptides, such as the antibiotic penicillin G and cyclosporine A, were also reviewed. He spoke about the amphoteric property of amino acids (their behavior as acids and bases at the same time) as zwitter ions, as they have both positive and negative charges.
Dr. Wiam reviewed a group of his published researches with his group, in which derivatives of amino acids were extracted and characterized (using NMR techniques and HPLC high-performance chromatography) as these compounds showed good biological activity.
