Doctoral thesis at the University of Basra discussing (Urban transport in the (city of Souq Al-Shuyoukh)
Doctoral thesis in the Department of Geography / College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basra - Urban Transport in the city of Souq Al-Shuyoukh - for the student (Imad Zidan Hamad).
The thesis dealt with transportation in the city of Souk Al-Shuyoukh, which suffers from a deteriorating reality in the city like other Iraqi cities, as the study included an introduction and five chapters. The second is a study of the natural controls and human variables and their impact on the transportation system in the city. The third chapter deals with the uses of the land for transportation purposes in the city, while the fourth chapter sheds light on the reality of trips in the study area and the characteristics of those in charge of it. Finally, the fifth chapter included an examination of the reality of the movement of vehicles on the streets and intersections of the study area, as well as a discussion of transport patterns and the future of urban transport in light of the increase in the number of residents and vehicles compared to the number and length of streets in the city.
The study aims to shed light on the reality of the transport situation in the study area and its spatial distribution with a statement of its actual reality through the chronological tracking of the historical stages it passed through, and then determining the efficiency of the transport network based on a number of local statistical standards approved by the Ministry of Planning and the General Traffic Directorate. In order to develop the best results and solutions to present them to the responsible authorities in order to achieve its development and the efficiency of its performance.
The study reached many important results, including:
1. The urban transport system in the city of Souq Al-Shuyoukh has passed through three morphological phases since its inception in 1761 until the time of the study in 2020, and according to each time phase, the transportation systems varied.
2. It was found through the study that the number of private cars and taxis increased compared to other types, while we note the absence of large means of transportation (buses), which leads to an increase in the number of cars, and then a large number of traffic jams, as well as pollution of all kinds and fuel consumption.
3. The study confirmed the inability of the street network in the city of Souk Al-Shuyoukh to absorb the daily traffic of vehicles, as the traffic volume of vehicles rises in excess of their design capacity, due to the annual increase in the number of residents and vehicles in light of the transportation networks remaining as they are without any development or change to accommodate Renewed variables as a result of this increase.
4. The study showed that the city streets suffer from a lack of infrastructure in all areas of the transport sector.
The study came out with a number of proposals to address the transportation problems in the city, including:
1. The expansion of some important streets in the city, and the completion of lagging projects, in addition to the ongoing maintenance of the current network.
2. The necessity of applying mass transportation in the city and encouraging the population, by providing modern and comfortable vehicles in numbers that cover the actual needs of the population, supervised by a committee affiliated with the public or private sector, as is the solution in neighboring countries.
3. The necessity of applying traffic laws and penalties from the official authorities for violators of traffic rules, and spending this money on the transport sector, as well as removing all abuses from streets and sidewalks.
4. The study recommends using the installation of surveillance cameras on the main streets, intersections and important places, such as being in the commercial area and following them up by the official authorities and applying the laws immediately and as is the case in neighboring countries.
