Topic & Abstract: The thesis tackles the investigation of Barbara Johnstone's model of persuasion that is applied to Saki's two selected short stories "The Lumber Room" and "The Open Window" to inspect the three linguistic strategies of the model throughout the stories.
Thesis Outline: The thesis falls into six chapters. Chapter one introduces the preliminaries of the study. Chapter two surveys the theoretical background of the study. Chapter three and four are concerned with the analysis of the selected stories.Chapter five consists of the results that are calculated drawing on the percentages which are figured out, and discussion of the results to clarify the numbers and the percentages arrived at. Chapter six closes up with the conclusions and the suggestions for further studies.
Conclusions: The thesis has come up with the following conclusions: Johnstone's model of persuasion is applicable to analyse Saki's selected stories in order to reveal the linguistic strategies of persuasion. In addition, the persuasive strategies of quasilogic, presentation , and analogy are effective means in the hands of the main characters to persuade each other. The results present some stylistic markers to show the researcher's view towards the writer's style.
