A faculty member from the University of Basrah receives the Iraqi Science Day Award
Dr. Adel Amalla Domad, a faculty member at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Basrah, received the Science Day Award for his patents in the field of medical sciences. He was honored by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, for (preparing and characterizing a derivative maleic acid and proving its effectiveness as an anti-breast cancer agent).
The patent involved the preparation of a new chemical compound using readily available materials at a lower cost. The inhibitory effectiveness was studied for a series of disease receptors associated with various types of cancers theoretically using molecular docking.
The docking results demonstrated high effectiveness of the prepared compound against protein receptors associated with the proliferation of breast cancer cells. These results were the first indicator of the compound's effectiveness. The anti-cancer activity was tested against live human cancer cells using a cell line method, which is a common model for breast cancer. It is widely used to study breast cancer biology, as well as to investigate drug resistance and develop new effective treatments against this disease.
The test results indicated the occurrence of programmed cell death in cancer cells. All test results showed that the prepared compound provided high inhibitory effectiveness against breast cancer cells, making it a promising candidate as an inhibitor for breast cancer cells.
