Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores Taxonomic and Environmental Study of Sporozoans and Crustaceans
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, focused on a taxonomic and environmental study of parasitic sporozoans and crustaceans in some fish from the Gharraf River.
Presented by PhD student Basim Akool Ali Al-Sahlani, the dissertation aims to morphologically diagnose the sporozoans and crustaceans parasitizing the fish of the Gharraf River, compare them with previously recorded species, and explore the potential registration of new species and hosts.
The study classified 13 species of myxosporean sporozoans, 12 of which were described and recorded for the first time in Iraq. Additionally, six species of parasitic crustaceans were documented.
The dissertation concluded that myxosporean sporozoans are specialized in infecting particular fish organs. It highlights the role of invasive fish species, such as the recently spread African catfish, in potentially spreading one or more types of parasites.
