University of Basra Organizes a Seminar on the Impact of Invasive Fish Species
The College of Agriculture at Basra University organized a seminar on the impacts of invasive fish species on inland fisheries in Basra Governorate.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Abdul Razzaq Mahmoud Mohammed, aimed to identify the main negative impacts of some invasive fish species on inland fisheries in Basra Governorate, particularly the common carp and tilapia.
The seminar also addressed major international studies on the environmental problems caused by invasive fish species on aquatic life in natural water systems and identified the most significant invasive fish species in the waters of Basra Governorate.
It additionally discussed the damage caused by fish such as common carp and tilapia to the catch volumes of local economic species such as bunni, himri, katfan, and shabout from 2009 to 2023, noting a significant increase in the catch volumes of common carp and tilapia and a decline in local economic species.
