University of Basra Organizes a Seminar on the Beekeeping in Basra Governorate
The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a scientific seminar on the reality of honey bees farming and the most important obstacles that limit its production.
The seminar aimed to review the reality of beekeeping in Basra governorate after the decline of vegetation cover in most rural areas in the province, including Abi al-Khasib and Shatt al-Arab.
The seminar, which was lectured by Dr. Hussein Ali Mahdi and teacher Daoud Salman Hamed, included a survey of some apiaries in some areas of the province with three apiaries for each district, namely Shatt Al-Arab, Al-Madina, Al-Hartha and Al-Zubair, and the lecturers reviewed tables and figures showing the number of hives and honey production during the years 2023-2024 and the most important pests that affect bees and methods of treatment.
The seminar recommended the need for concerted efforts to promote beekeeping in the governorate by planting green spaces to provide vegetation cover, as well as educating beekeepers about the seriousness of bee pests and ways to minimize their damage.
