University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on the Therapeutic Prospects of White Fungi
The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a workshop on the therapeutic prospects of white fungi.
The workshop aimed to clarify its nutritional importance and pharmaceutical potential.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Aseel Abdul-Hamid Abdul-Karim, showed that white fungi with the scientific name Agaricus bisporus have therapeutic importance in inhibiting the Leishmania parasite, and that extracts isolated from white fungi can be used as an alternative drug to the standard treatment known as Pentostam, especially since the latter is considered one of the highly toxic pentavalent antimonials groups.
The workshop recommended the need to find alternative treatments for some dangerous parasitic diseases in light of the high prices of available treatments and their limitation to developed countries and the lack of vaccines for parasitic diseases.
