University of Basra research team succeeds in growing Romanesco cauliflower in desert areas
A scientific research team at the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Basra consisting of Dr. Abdullah Abdulaziz Abdullah, Dr. Zainab Abdulkazim Jabbar and Dr. Omar Amer Ibrahim succeeded in cultivating the Romanesco cauliflower plant for the first time in Basra Governorate in the desert areas of Safwan district.
It is one of the winter vegetable crops belonging to the cruciferous family, close to broccoli and cauliflower, characterized by its unique geometric appearance, native to Italy, its floral discs are eaten raw, boiled, grilled or fried with high nutritional value because it contains many nutrients, including vitamins (C, K, A) and minerals, including zinc, iron, potassium, fiber and antioxidants.
Therefore, it has a high importance in promoting intestinal, heart and bone health and has a role in preventing some types of cancer, and because it is low in calories, it is used in healthy nutrition programs.
