Two Lecturers at the University of Basrah Publish an Article in a Swiss Journal
Two lecturers at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basrah, Dr. Ammar Yasser Jassim and Dr. Ameer Abbas Muhammad, published an article that was subjected to scientific review in cooperation with other researchers entitled "Addressing the global challenge of bacterial drug resistance: visions, strategies and future directions" in the journal
(Frontiers in Microbiology, Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy)
issued by the Swiss publishing house (Frontiers).
The journal, classified in the (Scopus Q 2) container with an impact factor of (4), is concerned with publishing pioneering research in the field of antimicrobials, resistance to antibiotic treatment, and mobile genetic elements.
The article explores the role of antibiotics in social and economic growth by improving healthcare, but their misuse has led to increased bacterial resistance, treatment failure, and higher healthcare costs. Despite a global decline in antibiotic consumption, overall use remains high, highlighting the need for strict regulations and preventive measures - especially in low- and middle-income countries.
This article therefore examines how environments such as farms, hospitals, and sanitation facilities contribute to the spread of resistance and explores potential solutions such as dietary changes, probiotics, combination therapies, and innovative treatments such as tailored antibiotics, antibodies, vaccines, and nanoparticles.
The article also identifies gaps in our understanding of the role of gut microbes in regulating antibiotic resistance, stressing that strong policy interventions are needed to mitigate this growing public health challenge.
