University of Basrah Performs Special Surgery for a Rare Case
The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Veterinary Hospital, performed surgery on a ruminant suffering from a rare case of inguinal hernia.
The veterinary surgical team operated on a sheep showing signs of an inguinal hernia, which can rarely appear during pregnancy and is characterized by a palpable, asymptomatic mass in the groin area. This type of hernia usually involves a portion of the uterus that houses the fetus due to weakness and tears in the muscular layer in the groin area.
The operation was successfully done three days after the lambs were born. The uterus returned to its normal position after birth, allowing the intestines to descend into the hernia area. The contents of the hernia were returned to the abdominal cavity, and the tear in the muscular layer was sutured.
