University of Basra organizes a seminar on pharmaceutical genetics
Qurna College of Education at the University of Basra organized a scientific seminar on pharmacogenetics.
The seminar aimed to clarify the concept of pharmacogenetics, which refers to the role of the genetic content of the organism in its pharmacological response, as it has been found that the metabolism of drugs may vary between individuals, sometimes significantly.
The seminar, which was lectured by Dr. Hasna Amer Mahoos, included a discussion on the variation in drug metabolism through a group of enzymes known as Cyp450, which is responsible for the metabolism of about 90% of drugs, and many types of these enzymes, which have a genetic origin, differ in their effectiveness in processing the drug, and these differences between individuals appear in the pharmacological response to certain types of drugs.
