Two Lecturers at University of Basrah Publish a Patent on Silicone Oil Recycling
Two lecturers at the College of Science at the University of Basrah, Professor Widad Saleh and Dr. Majeed Yaqoub, published a patent titled "Isolation of Nanosilica and Preparation of Silicone Oil from Some Polysiloxane Rubber Wastes Used in the Manufacture of Mobile Phone Cases." This research was part of Israa Majeed Yaqoub's graduation project.
This patent aims to reduce the spread of plastic waste, which causes the death of millions of terrestrial and marine organisms and negatively impacts agricultural crops and soil.
The work in this patent focused on exploiting some of this plastic waste, namely mobile phone cases made of silicone rubber, to prepare silicone oil through chemical and thermal reactions. Using simple equipment, this led to the isolation of silica for the first time using this method.
