This morning, the University of Basra held a central celebration marking its 61st anniversary, attended by a large gathering of professors, staff members, and government officials.
In his opening speech, the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, stated, “The University of Basra, which began with five colleges — Arts, Engineering, Economics, Science, and Law — in 1964, now comprises more than 21 scientific colleges. Throughout the decades, this towering institution has remained a beacon of knowledge and a source of intellectual and cultural radiance that its sons and daughters take pride in. The University of Basra has written bright chapters of achievements over these years, and today it lights another candle to continue its journey towards excellence and distinction.”
Al-Asadi added, “Over the past year, the university has achieved many noteworthy accomplishments, ranking highly in several global classifications, including Spain’s SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), and many of its departments topped the national rankings by Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Moreover, several of our faculty members were recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide.”
Al-Asadi further explained that last year witnessed the establishment of more than 495 scientific laboratories across various specializations, including the first educational laboratory of its kind in Iraq for anatomy studies at the College of Medicine, and a multimedia laboratory at the College of Education in Qurna. The university currently enrolls more than 3,000 postgraduate students and 80,000 undergraduate students. Several important projects were also inaugurated last year, including the opening of Dormitory No. 10 for female students and the construction of new infrastructure such as roads and walkways within the university campuses.
The celebration featured several activities, including the screening of documentary films showcasing the rich history of the University of Basra, its impact on the Basra community, and its major scientific achievements. The ceremony also included honoring the sports teams that won first place in the Iraqi universities’ chess and indoor football championships, in addition to honoring distinguished college deans, department heads, and dozens of outstanding administrators, faculty members, and staff across the university’s centers and colleges.
