A Faculty Member at the University of Basrah Publishes Research in an International Journal
Dr. Iman Tareq Ali, a faculty member at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah, published a research paper titled “A Comprehensive Study on Magnesium Deficiency, 25-(OH) Vitamin D3, Inflammatory Markers, and Thyroid Hormone in Relation to Bone Mineral Density in Iraqi Osteoporosis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study” in the American journal Health Science Reports (Q2 ranking), which has an impact factor of 2.1 and is classified in the second quartile by Scopus and Clarivate.
The research focused on studying magnesium, which is essential for bone development and mineralization and may influence the progression of osteoporosis. However, its relationship with decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk is not well understood.
The study aimed to identify key risk factors and the effect of magnesium deficiency on bone density in osteoporosis patients.
The study concluded that magnesium deficiency has a more significant impact on bone health than vitamin D deficiency. Consequently, magnesium deficiency emerges as a major risk factor for the development of osteoporosis and a predictor of fractures in patients suffering from osteoporosis or bone loss.
