University of Basrah Organizes Scientific Symposium on Sustainable Buffalo Breeding Improvement
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the Extension Center in Basrah and the Animal Production Department of the Basrah Directorate of Agriculture, organized a scientific symposium on sustainable improvement in buffalo breeding.
The symposium, which featured presentations by Dr. Majid Hassan Abdul Redha and a group of faculty members, aimed to explore the history of buffalo domestication, the earliest domestication centers and their connection to Iraqi buffalo, common diseases affecting buffalo, and the role of the Extension Center in supporting livestock breeders.
The event concluded with several key recommendations, including the sustainable enhancement of low-quality but abundant feed resources through specific additives, the formulation of nutritionally balanced and low-cost rations, and the production of silage from plants commonly found in public gardens and streets—particularly Salicornia—supplemented with nitrogen sources and biological enhancers. These measures aim to provide highly affordable feed while contributing to environmental sustainability.
