University of Basrah Uniquely Registers the First Genetic Strain of Gamma Coronavirus
Dr. Waleed Majeed Sakr from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with a research team from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tehran, has registered a genetic strain of the Gamma coronavirus—recognized as the first of its kind in Iraq and the province. The strain has been deposited in the international gene bank under the GenBank reference number: KU143902.1.
The research team isolated the virus from broiler chickens collected from several central and southern provinces in Iraq, due to the significance of studying it, as it poses a serious threat to poultry by causing respiratory problems that may lead to their death.
