A master's thesis at the University of Basra's Faculty of Medicine examines the spread of antibiotic resistance and its impact and consequences on society.
The thesis, submitted by student Ahmed Mohammed Nasser, aims to assess the prevalence and distribution of antimicrobial resistance, examine resistance patterns to commonly used antibiotics, evaluate the impact of antimicrobial resistance on individuals and healthcare systems, and explore patients' awareness and behaviors related to antibiotic use.
The dissertation included a discussion of the high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, especially broad-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing strains and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the irrational use of antibiotics in the community and the need for targeted public health interventions, more stringent antibiotic regulations and improved awareness campaigns to combat resistance and promote rational use of antibiotics.
