University of Basra master's thesis investigates the environmental survey of terrestrial plants
A master's thesis at the University of Basra's Faculty of Science investigated the environmental survey of terrestrial plants in Qurna district, north of Basra, and the use of some of them as an indicator of petroleum hydrocarbons.
The thesis, submitted by student Nour Amer Ismail, aimed to conduct a comprehensive environmental survey of terrestrial plants in Qurna district.
It included studying the environmental factors affecting them, and estimating some vegetation characteristics to be used as a biomarker for the accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons.
The thesis concluded that terrestrial vegetation suffers from significant degradation, and that the soils of the study areas are characterized by high salinity, and the impact of petroleum hydrocarbons on plant growth and development.
