University of Basra investigates the effect of biochar fermentation and organic residues on soil and maize growth
A master's thesis at the University of Basra's College of Agriculture investigated the effect of biochar fermentation with organic residues on the readiness of macro- and micro-nutrients in two calcareous soils and the growth of maize plants.
The study, presented by student Ruqaiya Jabbar Sheehan, aimed to compare the effect of the two types of charcoal produced from corn and rice residues.
The thesis concluded that increasing biochar improved the water holding capacity of the soil and increased the availability of nutrients, which was positively reflected in the growth of yellow corn.
