A master's thesis at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Basra examined the Non-Aligned Movement's position on political developments in Cyprus (1960–1974).
The thesis, submitted by student Zainab Alaa Hassan, aims to identify the Non-Aligned Movement's position on the political crisis in Cyprus from 1960 to 1974. and concluded that the movement had limited influence in guiding Cyprus's policy. The thesis recommended the need to evaluate the membership of states in international blocs as a diplomatic tool that serves their national interests.
The thesis consisted of four chapters dealing with the Non-Aligned Movement and Cyprus's accession to it from 1955 to 1961, Cyprus's accession to the Non-Aligned Movement and its impact on Cyprus's domestic and foreign policy from 1961–1964, Cyprus and the policy of non-alignment 1965–1967, Makarios' policy of non-alignment in January 1968, and the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
