Basra University organizes a seminar on determining the age of geological samples
The Marine Science Center at Basra University organized a seminar on the use of radioactive isotope technology in determining the age of geological strata, sediments, and fossils.
The workshop aimed to understand the history of the Earth's development and life on it, as well as the environmental conditions that accompanied geological formations through the radiometric history of the materials examined.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Manaf Qasim Al-Batat, explained how to measure the amount of radioactive isotopes and compare them with stable isotopes in the sample to determine its exact age, as radioactive isotopes begin to decay over time into stable isotopes, and each radioactive isotope has a half-life, which is the time it takes for half the amount of the isotope to decay.
