Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores the Phenomenon of the Everyday and the Familiar in the Poetry of Basrah Poet Siraj Mohammed
A master’s thesis at the College of Al-Qurna Education, University of Basrah, examined the phenomenon of the everyday and the familiar in the poetry of Basrah poet Siraj Mohammed.
The thesis, submitted by student Murtadha Zamil Hattab, aimed to study this phenomenon in Siraj Mohammed’s poetry by reviewing his poetry collections and selecting poems closely related to everyday and familiar themes.
The thesis began by defining the concepts of the everyday and the familiar both linguistically and terminologically. It comprised several chapters: the first focused on the most prominent linguistic and artistic elements in everyday poetry, such as linguistic deviation, verbal paradox, and linguistic tributaries. The second chapter discussed the everyday and familiar imagery, covering partial, compound, and holistic images. The third chapter was dedicated to narrative aspects of the everyday and familiar, analyzing characters, events, and the spatio-temporal setting.
The findings, presented in the conclusion, highlighted the poet’s tendency to employ this phenomenon as an influential tool to engage the audience, considering poetry as a medium for conveying ideas to others. The study emphasized that poetry should keep pace with the era and human thought, and that the poet uses the everyday and the familiar as a bridge to the poetic imagination, which serves as a means of expression and revelation.
