PhD Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores the Relationship Between COVID-19 and Rheumatoid Arthritis from a Molecular Perspective
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Science, University of Basrah, investigated the potential impact of certain viral infections on inflammatory joint diseases.
The dissertation, submitted by the researcher Maryam Hassan Sankour, aimed to explore the possible link between COVID-19 (whether through infection or vaccination) and the development of rheumatoid arthritis by assessing changes in the gene expression of six key immune-related genes.
The study concluded that COVID-19 infection leads to the activation of inflammatory pathways and that the resulting overexpression may be the primary factor triggering a cascade of molecular changes that contribute to the development of the chronic inflammatory response associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The research recommends further in-depth studies on other autoimmune diseases among infected and vaccinated individuals.
