Towards a Healthy and Safe Future: University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on the Harms of Smoking
The Department of Scientific Affairs at the University of Basrah organized an awareness and educational workshop titled “The Harms of Smoking: Effects, Prevention, and Treatment”, attended by the Director of the Department of Scientific Affairs and the Director of Scholarships and Cultural Relations, with the aim of fostering a smoke-free, healthy society.
The workshop sought to shed light on the severe consequences of smoking—not only for smokers themselves, but also for those around them, given the greater risks it poses to the smoker.
Delivered by faculty member Abbas Jumaa Hamdan, the session offered a comprehensive explanation of the health risks associated with tobacco use, including chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular conditions, respiratory disorders, as well as its psychological and social impacts.
Assistant Lecturer Jabbar Ameen Al-Latif, Director of the Scholarships and Cultural Relations Department at the University of Basrah, emphasized that the university continues to host such workshops—especially targeting young people—to raise awareness and foster a generation that makes informed, healthy choices. This initiative aims to contribute to the building of a knowledgeable and health-conscious society.
