University of Basrah Organizes Training and Awareness Workshop on Fire Safety and Emergency Evacuation Procedures
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote preventive awareness and enhance staff preparedness for emergency situations, the Natural History Museum at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Civil Defense, organized a comprehensive training and awareness workshop focused on fire-fighting, evacuation, and rescue procedures in case of fire outbreaks.
The workshop aimed to strengthen the readiness of university personnel to respond effectively to potential emergencies within the institution. It also sought to test the efficiency of the internal evacuation plan, train staff on quick response strategies, and promote collaboration with civil defense teams while benefiting from their field expertise.
Key topics addressed in the workshop included safe handling of household gas cylinders in the event of ignition, an overview of the various types of fire extinguishers (such as dry powder, carbon dioxide, water, and others), as well as clear explanations of their differences and proper usage techniques.
The workshop also featured a practical simulation of a fire breaking out inside the museum. During the drill, a structured evacuation of employees and visitors from exhibition halls and offices was carried out, alongside the use of on-site firefighting equipment to extinguish the simulated fire.
At the conclusion of the event, the museum’s administration extended its gratitude and appreciation to the Civil Defense Directorate for its significant efforts in ensuring the success of the workshop. The administration also affirmed its commitment to continued collaboration in organizing similar training programs in the future, including those related to first aid and crisis management.
