PhD Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores Genetic Diversity of Helicobacter pylori
A PhD dissertation at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated the genetic diversity of Helicobacter pylori and its virulence factors in both humans and domestic animals such as cats and dogs, highlighting the similarities between the strains found in both.
The dissertation, presented by PhD candidate Kareem Khudair Kareem, aimed to identify genetic diversity and possible transmission pathways between humans and animals by analyzing bacterial virulence factors, including bacterial toxins and alleles.
Based on the analysis of more than 260 animal samples and 100 human samples, the study concluded that there is a potential for H. pylori transmission between humans and animals, which could contribute to gastric infections in humans.
