University of Basrah Prepares to Hold Scientific Symposium to Address Basrah’s Water Crisis
Under the patronage of University President Dr. Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, the University of Basrah is preparing to host an extensive scientific symposium aimed at proposing recommendations and practical solutions to alleviate water scarcity, rising salinity, and pollution in Basrah Governorate.
This initiative is being supervised by Dean of the College of Agriculture, Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Mohammed Al-Shawi, and coordinated by Dr. Mohsen Abdul-Hay, Head of the Department of Soil and Water Resources Sciences, in collaboration with the Marine Science Center and the College of Marine Sciences. The goal is to support both local and central governments with realistic and implementable solutions.
In this context, a preparatory meeting was held between Dr. Al-Asadi, Dr. Al-Shawi, and Dr. Abdul-Hay to review progress on preparing technical working papers that include applicable scientific solutions based on research findings and field data.
The symposium aims to produce actionable proposals and recommendations that will be submitted to local authorities and relevant ministries for prompt implementation. These proposed solutions—ranging from immediate interventions to long-term strategies—are expected to significantly mitigate the negative impacts of water scarcity and declining water quality on Basrah’s agricultural, environmental, and industrial sectors.
