PhD Dissertation at the University of Basrah Examines Hydropolitical Analysis
A PhD dissertation at the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basrah examined the hydropolitical analysis of the deterioration of water resources in Iraq.
The dissertation, presented by student Shajan Jassim Muhammad, aimed to identify the causes of water deterioration in Iraq and its existing and potential impacts on water security.
The dissertation included the sources of water resources in Iraq, the challenges and impacts of their deterioration, and the most important future trends for the sustainability of water resources in Iraq.
The dissertation recommended that decision-makers in Iraq strive to reach an agreement with Turkey and Syria to formulate a resolution committing all parties to sharing the water in the Tigris and Euphrates basin and its uses in a manner that satisfies the riparian states. It also recommended activating the role of awareness and water education to ensure rational water consumption and reduce the phenomenon of waste and depletion of water resources. It also recommended that media, educational, and civil society institutions play an active role in this field.
