University of Basrah Organizes Scientific Workshop on Techniques for Extracting and Analyzing Plant Compounds
As part of its efforts to enhance the practical and research capabilities of postgraduate students, the College of Education in Qurna at the University of Basrah organized a scientific workshop titled:
“The Role of Soxhlet, Freeze Dryer, and GC-MS Devices in Extracting and Analyzing Active Plant Compounds.”
The workshop aimed to develop students’ skills in handling advanced research instruments and to highlight their applications in microbiology and phytochemistry.
Presented by Dr. Adnan Badr Al-Hawash, along with faculty members Afrah Talib Abdullah and Anfal Falah Abdullah, the workshop included both theoretical and practical sessions covering:
• The operation of the Soxhlet apparatus used for extracting plant compounds
• The Freeze Dryer, which helps preserve the chemical properties of the extracts
• The GC-MS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry) device used for the qualitative and quantitative identification of components within plant extracts
