University of Basrah Records Two New Isolates of a Virus Infecting Cattle
A joint research team from the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture at the University of Basrah, led by Dr. Wissam Munther and Dr. Hassan Neama, announced a significant scientific achievement: the registration of two new isolates of Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2.
This virus is the cause of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), which affects cattle.
The team was able to isolate and diagnose the virus from disease cases in southern Iraq. After DNA analysis, they found that these isolates had never been recorded in Iraq before and were included in the global gene bank (GenBank).
This discovery is an important step toward developing better diagnostic and preventative methods for this disease, which causes significant economic losses for farmers.
This achievement also underscores the University of Basra's pioneering role in scientific research and community service.
