A Medical Team from the University of Basrah Successfully Excises Adrenal Gland
A medical team at the University of Basrah, led by the Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Noufal Ali Al-Mubarak, and consultant physician Dr. Abdul Ameer Mohsen Al-Darraji, successfully performed a complex surgical procedure to remove the left adrenal gland of a 36-year-old female patient from Basrah.
Dr. Al-Mubarak, head of the medical team, explained that the patient was suffering from acute confusion, severely elevated blood pressure reaching 260/160 mmHg, a rapid heart rate of 150 beats per minute, and signs of acute heart and kidney failure.
He added that after conducting urgent clinical examinations, laboratory tests, and radiological imaging, the team diagnosed a large adrenal tumor secreting extremely high levels of adrenaline. An emergency meeting of the endocrinology committee at the center was then held to determine the necessary urgent treatments to stabilize the patient and prepare her for immediate surgical intervention. He emphasized that the condition carried a 100% mortality rate if left untreated and a 90% mortality rate even with surgical intervention.
