Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores the Holy Qur’an in Italian Orientalist Thought Between the Reality of the Divine Text and the Ideologies Directed Toward It
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, entitled “The Holy Qur’an in Italian Orientalist Thought Between the Reality of the Divine Text and the Ideologies Directed Toward It” investigated the position of the Qur’an within Italian Orientalist scholarship.
The dissertation, submitted by the researcher Abbas Qasim Atiya, aimed to examine the extent of Italian Orientalists’ engagement with the Qur’an, analyze their perceptions, and evaluate both their translations of the Qur’anic text and their interpretative approaches to this sacred scripture.
The study was structured into five chapters:
• The first chapter addressed Italian Orientalism and Islamic heritage.
• The second explored Italian Orientalists’ studies of Qur’anic content and their reflective perspectives.
• The third examined the printing and translation of the Qur’an by Italian Orientalists.
• The fourth analyzed the image of divine revelation in Italian Orientalist discourse, oscillating between rejection and affirmation.
• The fifth chapter discussed manifestations of interpretation, focusing on their exegetical views of the Qur’anic text.
