The University of Basrah held an extensive symposium titled “Water Resources Sector in Basrah – Challenges and Solutions”, organized by the College of Agriculture, the College of Marine Science, and the Marine Science Center, with the participation of academic researchers, specialists, and community leaders. The aim was to discuss the severe water challenges facing the province and to propose scientific and practical solutions to address them.
University President Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kazem Al-Asadi emphasized that the symposium was not only about diagnosing problems but also about seeking practical and applicable solutions that combine academic expertise with real-world application. He stressed that the University of Basrah, through its colleges and research centers, is committed to serving as the province’s primary center of expertise, providing scientifically grounded and well-studied solutions.
Al-Asadi further highlighted the importance of institutional cooperation between universities, government departments, the private sector, and civil society organizations to tackle this pressing issue.
He concluded by affirming that the water crisis is a national priority requiring long-term strategic planning and courageous decisions to safeguard future generations’ right to clean and sustainable water.
The symposium recommended a set of practical solutions, including the establishment of large water basins and regulatory dams for storage and management, as well as the development of groundwater transfer projects. It also called for accelerating water desalination projects, promoting wastewater treatment, modernizing irrigation systems, strengthening external water policy, and launching awareness campaigns to encourage the rational use of water.
