Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores the Foundations of Directorial Writing in Iraqi Theatre
A master’s thesis at the College of Fine Arts, University of Basrah, examined the foundations of directorial writing for the director–playwright’s text in Iraqi theatre.
The thesis, submitted by researcher Doaa Ali Abdul-Hussein Rahmah, aims to identify the visual and directorial principles of writing the performance text in accordance with the vision of the director as author.
The study addressed significant topics that highlighted a number of directorial insights, most notably the director’s relationship with his own expressive self, independent of imitation.
The thesis concluded that the foundations of directorial writing in Iraqi theatre stylistically rely on realism and telegraphy in shaping the language of performance, in addition to expressionism and absurdism in activating its other elements.
