Master's Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines the Effectiveness of Food Wraps for Storing Strawberries
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah conducted a master's thesis on the preparation and evaluation of composite food wraps and their effectiveness in extending the shelf life of strawberries.
The thesis, presented by researcher Nagham Farhan Rabie, aimed to produce edible wraps based on natural polymers to enhance the preservation of soft fruits.
The study included the preparation of wraps from sodium alginate and pectin and their improvement by adding stearic acid, which contributed to enhancing mechanical properties and reducing permeability. Diagnostic test results showed good thermal stability and distinct structural interactions. The wraps helped reduce weight loss, maintain qualitative properties, and reduce enzymatic and microbial activity of strawberries.
