Master’s Thesis at University of Basrah Explores Hydrological Changes
A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basrah, examined hydrological changes in the Western Hammar Marsh and their environmental impacts.
The thesis, presented by student Ahmed Abbas Jkhair, aimed to analyze the environmental consequences of water degradation in the Hammar Marsh in Dhi Qar Province from 1970 to 2025. It highlighted that water scarcity poses a major threat to the ecosystem, driven by both climate change and unsustainable water management practices.
The research revealed that the marsh has lost a significant portion of its area due to reduced water inflows, leading to deterioration in water quality and dangerously high concentrations of salts and chemicals. This environmental decline has also contributed to a noticeable rise in temperatures, with the annual average increasing from 24.51°C in the 1970s to 27.33°C during 2010–2024.
