Scientific Study at University of Basrah Identifies Two Types of Lice Infesting Goats in Basrah
A scientific study conducted at the University of Basrah by Dr. Suzan Abdul-Jabbar and Dr. Nadia Kazem from the College of Veterinary Medicine, along with Dr. Huda Shaker from the College of Pharmacy, investigated the isolation, identification, and classification of two different lice species infesting local goats in Basrah Province.
The study, published in the Open Veterinary Journal (indexed in Scopus Q2), successfully identified and classified two types of lice—biting and sucking lice—affecting local goats. Importantly, the research also recorded a new lice species not previously documented in Basrah, representing a significant scientific contribution.
The findings highlight the need for further research to identify emerging parasite species in the region and emphasize the importance of developing effective strategies to control them due to the harm they cause to animals.
