Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores Hypocrisy in the Prophet’s Era (Between the Qur’anic Perspective and Historical Narratives)
A master’s thesis at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, examined Hypocrisy in the Prophet’s Era (Between the Qur’anic Perspective and Historical Narratives).
The thesis, submitted by researcher Hassan Aziz Bahr, aimed to identify Qur’anic verses, Prophetic traditions, and historical accounts that referred to the hypocrites, and to clarify the concept of hypocrisy during the Prophet’s time as reflected in the Qur’an, works of biography, and historical sources. It further sought to highlight points of agreement and divergence between these sources, document major incidents involving hypocrites—some of which may have been overlooked by certain historians but were indicated in the Qur’an—and examine the nature of the relationship between Muslims and hypocrites, as well as how the Prophet dealt with this phenomenon, the effects of which remain evident to this day.
The thesis was structured into three chapters: the conceptual framework of hypocrisy in light of religious texts; hypocrites in the Prophet’s era—identity disclosure and role analysis; and the historical development of hypocrisy during the Prophetic era—an examination of key positions and events.
