Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores Al-Fawāʾid al-Ṣamadīyah in Arabic Linguistics by Sheikh al-Bahāʾī
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, investigated Al-Fawāʾid al-Ṣamadīyah in Arabic linguistics by Sheikh al-Bahāʾī (d. 1031 AH), through the commentaries of Jamāl al-Dīn al-Lāhījānī (one of the prominent scholars of the 11th century AH), Sayyid ʿAlī Khān al-Madanī (d. 1120 AH), and Sayyid Ṣādiq Mahdī al-Shīrāzī, in a comparative grammatical study.
The dissertation, submitted by the researcher Haidar Wahid Hammadi, aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the three commentators under study with regard to their methods of presentation and use of textual evidence. It further sought to highlight each commentator’s approach to presenting grammatical material, to examine points of agreement and divergence in their interpretations of grammatical rules, and to showcase their respective scholarly contributions in facilitating the learner’s understanding of Arabic grammar.
The dissertation consisted of three chapters in which the researcher examined the methodologies and sources of the commentators, their approaches to the foundations of grammar, as well as their critiques, revisions, and preferences concerning disputed grammatical issues.
