University of Basrah Explores Glucose Metabolism and Insulin Resistance in Women
A master’s thesis at the College of Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated glucose metabolism and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in Basrah.
The study, conducted by graduate student Rihab Halboot Huteihet, aimed to determine the pattern of glucose metabolism among women with PCOS, assess the degree of insulin resistance, and examine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this group. In addition, the research sought to evaluate pancreatic beta-cell function.
The findings revealed that women with PCOS experience a significant increase in blood glucose levels, along with elevated insulin levels, higher insulin resistance indices, and increased beta-cell function indices. These results suggest a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases associated with atherosclerosis.
