University of Basra Organizes Lecture on the Increasing Salinity of the Shatt al-Arab
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a scientific lecture addressing the issue of rising salinity in the waters of the Shatt al-Arab.
The lecture, delivered by Lecturer Faiz Younis Khalil, aimed to analyze the phenomenon of increasing salinity and to highlight its causes and potential solutions.
The lecture discussed salinity rise as a recurring environmental problem affecting the residents of Basra, resulting from reduced freshwater flow from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers due to dam construction and climate change, as well as the contribution of saline waters from the Arabian Gulf in exacerbating the issue. This increase has negatively impacted drinking water and agriculture, alongside other environmental challenges such as industrial and agricultural pollution and the decline of palm groves.
